These are some sample questions that you may want to use in your next interview.

Goals and Motivations:

  • What have you done since you were hired on your last job to be a more effective performer?
  • What have you done in the last year with your own time and money that would make you more valuable to Duke?
  • What have you done that has demonstrated a high level of initiative?
  • Where do you want to be in your career in five years?
  • What are your short term and long term career objectives?
  • How will this job enable you to reach your long-term career goals?
  • How do you feel about the progress you've made in your career to date?
  • What career objectives have you met?
  • What aspects of your career have not lived up to your expectations?

Self-Esteem and Personal Effectiveness:

  • What do you consider is a successful career?
  • What do you feel it takes for a person to be successful in your field?
  • What types of rewards are most meaningful to you?
  • What is most important to you in a job?
  • When have you felt fully appreciated for your contribution?
  • How does this affect the effort you make on the job?
  • What project has made you really excited?
  • What are you looking forward to?
  • What aspect of your work life do you feel passionate about?

To Determine Dedication:

  • If we hire you, how long could we expect you to stay in the organization?
  • How do you define challenge?
  • What do you feel you can achieve at Duke that you can't elsewhere?
  • Of the various work environments you've experienced in your different jobs, which was most productive for you? Why?
  • Which environment was the least productive for you?
  • What would you like to avoid in your worklife?

To Determine Personal Integrity:

  • Tell me about a time people you were working with weren't being as honest or sincere as you would have liked. What did you do?
  • When have you felt the most pressure to compromise your personal integrity? What was the outcome?
  • Have you ever had to put your job on the line for something you believed in?

To Determine the Ability to Get Along with Others:

  • Describe for me a situation where self-centered behavior produced bad teamwork that was expensive for the company you were working for.
  • If you were a supervisor and wanted to solve a problem, how would you do it?
  • Briefly describe your present coworkers and their strengths and weaknesses.
  • What do you feel makes for good teamwork and morale?
  • Tell me about a time when you pulled a team together.

To Determine Stress Management:

  • How do you feel about your workload?
  • Tell me about a situation where a crisis developed to meet a deadline requiring long hours of extra effort. What happened and how did you handle it?
  • Describe for me a difficult, somewhat political situation you've faced.
  • What types of problems frustrate you the most?
  • What was the toughest emergency you've ever faced?

To Determine How He/She Accepts Direction and Feedback:

  • What have you changed about yourself as a result of criticism?
  • What have you been criticized for that you have heard from more than one source?

To Determine a Relationship with a Supervisor:

  • How much do you work alone in your current job?
  • Describe for me your best boss. What made him or her your favorite?
  • Which was your worst? Why?
  • What do you think your boss will say when you resign?
  • How could your boss have done a better job?
  • What constructive criticism would you offer for the way your unit was run?
  • What type of reference do you think your former bosses will give you when I call them?
  • What do you think they will say about your organizational skills?
  • Give an example of an important goal you had to set and tell me about your progress in reaching that goal.
  • Describe the most creative work-related project you have completed.
  • Tell me about a situation in the past year in which you had to deal with a very upset customer or coworker.
  • Give me an example of a conflict you encountered on the job and how you handled it.
  • What did you do in your last job to contribute toward a teamwork environment? Be specific.
  • Give me an example of a time when you were able to communicate successfully with another person, even when that individual may not have personally liked you.
  • Give me an example of when you had to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to get a job done.
  • Tell me about a specific occasion when you conformed to a policy even though you did not agree to it.
  • Describe your most recent group effort.
  • Describe a situation in which others within your organization depended on you.
  • Pick a Duke guiding principle and ask the candidate to explain why it is important to them.
  • What skills do you think you bring to this job?

*The questions above are only some suggested questions that should be used only after supervisory training and consultations with your recruiter.
