Nicotine Gum
Nicotine gum delivers nicotine in either 2 or 4 mg doses through buccal (mouth) absorption. There is a specific
30-minute chewing regimen, which differs from the ordinary way of chewing gum in the rate of chewing and the need to
"park" the gum between your cheek and gums for periods of time to maximize absorption.
An acidic environment decreases
absorption of nicotine, so coffee, juice, sodas, etc. should not be used immediately before, during, or after nicotine
gum use. For those who smoke 1-24 cigarettes per day, the 2 mg gum is recommended. For those who smoke 25 or more cigarettes
daily, the 4 mg gum is recommended. Scheduled dosing, e.g. 1 piece of 2 mg gum per hour, is considered more effective
than irregular use.
