Last year, Live for Life's smoking cessation programs helped more than 800 members of the Duke community stop smoking. Meet some successful "quitters" and learn how Duke can help you join them...

Eligibility
Starting January 1, 2008, these resources are available to Duke employees and their adult dependents who are covered under a Duke health plan (Duke Basic, Duke Select, Blue Care and Duke Options). (Note: Expanded smoking cessation coverage for spouses and same-sex partners not covered by a Duke health plan ends December 31, although a variety of excellent resources are still available.)

Kicking the Habit Johnetta Moore had tried to quit smoking many times, but she finally managed to kick the habit two years ago with the help of a Duke smoking cessation program.

LIVE FOR LIFE to Expand Tobacco Cessation Programs January 1, 2008

Starting January 1, 2008, Duke is enhancing its tobacco cessation program offerings to make it easier to quit. These enhancements grow out of the support of Duke Medicine and its collaboration with the CEO Roundtable on Cancer.

Tobacco Cessation Programs

Duke's LIVE FOR LIFE program will partner with you every step of your journey to freedom from tobacco. A variety of programs are available to help you meet your goals.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Stop Smoking Pharmaceuticals

Once you're enrolled in a LIVE FOR LIFE tobacco cessation program, you have the option of receiving nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) at no cost to you. This includes gum, patch and lozenge. You are also eligible for a three-month supply of the stop smoking prescription drugs Chantix™ (varenicline) or buproprion with no co-pay (a physician's prescription is required).

Physician Counseling Session

Starting January 1, 2008, you can review your tobacco use history, personal health risks, rewards of quitting, and options for medications and nicotine replacement therapy during a physician counseling session, also at no cost to you.

How Addicted Are You to Tobacco?

Take the Nicotine Addiction Test to find out.

Why Should I Quit?

Tobacco use accounts for the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular disease, and is the single most preventable cause of disease and premature death in the world. According to the World Health Organization, currently tobacco related-diseases kill one in ten adults worldwide. This results in approximately five million deaths each year.
