of programs and resources to support employees who want to learn new skills and
advance their careers at Duke.
 A professional development plan is created
by the manager working closely with the staff member to document the goals, required skill and competency
development, and objectives the staff member will need to accomplish in order to
support continuous improvement and career development.
Professional Development Resources
Effective staff development should be a continuously active collaboration between Duke supervisors and
staff. Duke offers an array of programs and resources to support employees who want to learn new skills
and advance their careers at Duke.
Duke provides reimbursement of tuition for classes taken at Duke or
any other higher educational institution accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools with a physical presence in North Carolina.
Workshops offered to Duke employees in the areas of computer
technology, work skills and management development. L&OD can also arrange private classes or customize
classes according to specific organizational needs.
Resources designed to assist both mentors and mentees in developing and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships.
PDI Programs
The Professional Development Institute offers
two long-term professional development training programs - the
Office Staff Development Program and the
First Time Supervisor Program.
A
Duke-affiliated club that provides instruction and skill development to help
people speak effectively, organize and conduct meetings, and motivate others.
Duke Continuing Studies offers more than 200 non-credit courses and workshops.
Courses range from the purely academic to the practical for both personal
enrichment and career development.
Other Educational Opportunities (including GED)
Duke employees can also take classes at other local universities, including Durham Technical Community College
and North Carolina Central University.
In addition, Duke employees who would like to earn their GED can participate in
a GED program offered by Durham Technical Community College.
