LIVE FOR LIFE Introduces Steps to Health Incentive Program

Small steps can lead to big changes

Beginning October 1, 2004, you can take a step towards achieving a healthier lifestyle through the Steps to Health incentive program offered by LIVE FOR LIFE.

The Steps to Health program replaces the Lifestyle Activity Record (LAR program) as LIVE FOR LIFE's health incentive program, which was introduced several years ago to encourage faculty and staff to practice healthy behaviors. The program represents a better approach to achieving the same goal by focusing specifically on improving measurable health results.

"LIVE FOR LIFE is dedicated to optimizing the health, well-being and productivity of Duke faculty and staff," said Julie Joyner, senior manager of LIVE FOR LIFE. "By introducing the Steps to Health program, we are offering participants more valuable support services as well as the opportunity to earn rewards."

LIVE FOR LIFE staff will help participants create a step-by-step plan for healthier living and then provide support to help them achieve their health goals. Participants who achieve their health goals may earn up to $1,000 LIVE FOR LIFE dollars, which can be used to purchase merchandise such as fitness videos, pedometers, fleece jackets, and duffle bags through the LIVE FOR LIFE store.

To participate in the program, you will first need to participate in a HealthCheck, a free and confidential health assessment administered by a LIVE FOR LIFE nurse. If you have participated in a HealthCheck within the prior three months of signing up for Steps to Health, you do not need to participate in another HealthCheck to enroll in the program. You can register for a HealthCheck in one of the following three convenient ways:

  • Call: 684-3136, option 1
  • E-mail: lflprogm@mc.duke.edu
  • In person: Duke Clinic, Employee Occupational Health & Wellness, Room 04290

For those currently participating in the LAR program, you may continue to log your health activities and earn LIVE FOR LIFE dollars through the LAR program until September 30, 2004. LIVE FOR LIFE dollars earned through the LAR program will be accepted in the Steps to Health program however LAR cards need to be submitted by September 30, 2004 to collect any remaining LIVE FOR LIFE dollars. As of October 1, you may earn LIVE FOR LIFE dollars through the Steps to Health program and, beginning in November, the store merchandise will be enhanced to include new and more significant incentives that can be purchased with LIVE FOR LIFE dollars.

To learn more about Steps to Health or other LIVE FOR LIFE services that can help you maximize your health, call LIVE FOR LIFE at 684-3136 (option 1) or visit the LIVE FOR LIFE web site.
