Tips To Stay Cool When Exercising This Summer

  • Plan ahead and workout in the morning to avoid exercise during the hottest times of they day, which is between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Avoid exercise if the temperature and humidity are in the "high risk" category of the Heat Stress Index, or the temperature is 90 degree F or higher.
  • Wear lose fitting, light colored mesh or dry-fit clothing to allow for the evaporation of sweat.
  • Drink 1 - 2 cups of fluid one hour before exercise.
  • Twenty to thirty minutes prior to exercise, drink 8 ounce of fluid.
  • After every ten to fifteen minutes of exercise, drink 4 to 8 ounces of fluid.
  • Within thirty minutes into your exercise session, drink an additional 8 ounces of fluid.
  • After your exercise session, replace water losses by drinking 2 cups for every one pound of body weight lost during that exercise session.
