The 2005 Duke Run/Walk Club begins March 21.

Spring Forward Into Fitness With the Duke Run/Walk Club

Program begins March 21

The Duke Run/Walk Club provides faculty and staff with an opportunity to exercise in a group setting and have fun while getting fit. The free 12-week training program, which begins March 21, includes cardiovascular and strength training for all fitness levels, from new exercisers and beginning runners to those training for 15k events. Participants from previous programs have seen tremendous results in their fitness levels, from lower blood pressure, body fat percentage and cholesterol to increases in self-esteem and confidence.

"Two years ago I would have never guessed I could run a 5k, and now I have run several at the age of 57," said Susan Ficks, a medical secretary in the department of Thoracic Surgery at Duke Hospital and participant of the Run/Walk Club.

Based on their fitness level, participants can choose from five training programs (Walkers, Beginner Run/Walkers, Intermediate Run/Walkers, Advanced Run/Walkers, and Runners) that will assist them in achieving their health goals. The club meets every Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at two locations (in front of Wallace Wade Stadium and across from Whole Foods at the Duke East Campus Wall), so participants can choose to exercise with their group at the location that works best for them. In addition, strength classes pertaining to walking and running will be offered Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium for Run/Walk participants.

Participants can also run or walk with the Run/Walk Club at local races throughout the season. LIVE FOR LIFE will be coordinating a Duke Team to participate in local 5k events including Girls on The Run, Angels Among US, City of Medicine, the Duke Family Fun Run/Walk, and the Race for the Cure. Employees are encouraged to register for the Duke Team and the 5k events that they would like to participate in.

For more information or to register for the Run/Walk Club or Duke Team, please visit the Run/Walk Club Web Site, stop by the LIVE FOR LIFE office at 04290 Red Zone, Duke Clinics, or call 681-0520.
