New Program to Focus on Developing Supervisory Skills
In light of the essential role of supervisors and the growing staffing need in this critical area, the Professional Development
Institute is introducing a new program focused on preparing qualified internal candidates for supervisory roles at Duke. Nominations
for the program are being accepted through October 7, 2005, for the January 2006 class.
"Good supervisors play a critical role in helping Duke develop a positive work environment dedicated to excellence in education,
research and patient care," said Linda Hendricks, assistant vice president in Human Resources. "Supervisors are the front line
for any organization, so developing strong, supportive supervisors is typically the best way to improve individual and operational
performance, staff retention, and the overall work environment."
The 12-month First Time Supervisor Program will provide a structured training curriculum in the areas of people management,
financial management and budgeting, project management and other supervisory competencies. During the program, participants
will need to be released from work to spend up to two days per month of classroom instruction as well as some additional time
for coaching sessions, team projects and on-the-job stretch assignments.
Selection for the program will be highly selective because of limited space available (up to 20 participants) and the financial
investment Duke is making per individual. Nominees should have a minimum of three years of Duke experience, have demonstrated
mastery of current position and have performance that meets expectations. Staff interested in the program should discuss it
with their manager, who must submit nominations on their behalf.
"The foundation of this program - and one of the most important factors for success - is the nomination of Duke staff who have
demonstrated effective leadership capabilities, good judgment, exemplary customer service and problem-solving skills in their
current non-supervisory roles," Hendricks said. "The First Time Supervisor Program provides managers with an opportunity to
recognize and support outstanding individual performers who are ready to assume management responsibilities."
The First Time Supervisors Program is the second program from PDI and is part of Duke's continued commitment to support identified
staffing needs while providing professional development opportunities that enhance loyalty and workforce diversity. The PDI's
first program was launched in 2003 to support office staff development and has now received national recognition for its success.
"By investing in staff members who want to advance their careers at Duke, we hope to provide long-term benefits through increased
loyalty and workforce diversity," said Sally Allison, manager of the Professional Development Institute. "We encourage managers
to consider nominating staff in their area who would be ideal candidates for this program. Ideal candidates include staff who
have not only demonstrated core leadership skills, but who also have the interest and personal qualities required to become
effective supervisors."
Nomination packets and additional information about the First Time Supervisor Program are available online at
the PDI Web Site.
