Accident Insurance Special Enrollment Period Begins July 18
No one likes to think about getting injured, but accidents happen. And when they do, care can be expensive. But through
Duke's personal accident insurance, faculty and staff can be prepared for the unexpected.
Duke recently changed personal accident insurance carriers and negotiated a better rate for individual coverage. Faculty
and staff can enroll for this coverage (offered by Mutual of Omaha) during a special enrollment period beginning July 18.
"Many people don't stop to think about the likelihood of themselves or a family member needing care as a result of a serious
accident or the exorbitant cost of that care," said Lois Ann Green, director of Benefits. "This special enrollment period offers
faculty and staff an excellent opportunity to obtain additional security for themselves and their family at very low rates."
Personal accident insurance, also called Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance, provides important financial protection
for faculty, staff and family members in the event of accidental death, dismemberment, or permanent total disability as the result
of an accident.
"Duke's Personal Accident Insurance offers better coverage and at a lower cost than plans available through most banks and credit
unions," said Green. "Personal Accident Insurance is part of an overall benefits package at Duke that offers you advantages and
options that few employers can match."
Participants may elect coverage from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of
$750,000. Faculty and staff scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week are
eligible to apply for coverage. If you select coverage, you may also insure your
spouse/domestic partner (if under age 70) and your unmarried, dependent children
until age 19 (age 26 if a full-time student and regardless of age for a
handicapped child who is your dependent). Enrollment information will be mailed
to eligible faculty and staff in mid-July, or you can visit the
Personal Accident Insurance Web
Site to obtain an enrollment package.
