Duke Recognized for Commitment to Internship Program for Minority Students
Duke University was recently honored with the Corporate Spirit Award at the INROADS "Partners In A Shared Vision" award ceremony.
INROADS is an internship program designed to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. The Corporate Spirit Award recognizes the corporate partner who displays an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication to the overall mission of INROADS.
"Duke has been a corporate sponsor of the INROADS program since 1998 as part of its commitment to diversity and dedication to recruiting and retaining talented minorities to Duke," said Monica Ziegler, a representative of Human Resources and coordinator of the Duke INROADS program partnership.
The INROADS program helps interns develop the skills and behaviors that are necessary to increase their knowledge about the world of work. Following the completion of the internship, the program encourages departments to hire an employee who has experience within the department and the organization. This has proven to be a positive situation in the past for both Duke and INROADS, with currently four of the eight previous INROADS interns at Duke having been hired into full-time positions.
This summer, Randy Hudson, Bryant Reams, and Felicia Jones participated in the INROADS program. Departments
sponsoring these interns included the Office of Information Technology, Office of Community Affairs, School of Medicine Finance & Resource Planning office, and the Office of Medical Education. These students will return next summer to continue their internships with these departments.
If a department is interested in learning more about the INROADS program, please contact Monica Ziegler by phone at 684-5557 or by email at
