HHS Honors Duke University's Farmers Market As One of the Nation's Top Employer Programs Focused on Prevention

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced today that Duke University's Live for Life employee health promotion program is one of eleven winners of the second annual Innovation in Prevention Awards for its Farmers Market.

The awards highlight businesses and organizations that are leading efforts to promote healthy lifestyles. They are presented by Secretary Thompson as part of President Bush's HealthierUS initiative and Secretary Thompson's emphasis on preventing chronic disease and improving Americans' lives.

The program based in Durham, N.C., is recognized in the category of Healthy Workforce Large Employer. It provides fresh fruits and vegetables as alternatives to vending machines and fast foods. It also has campaigns to help participants learn about healthy food choices.

"Duke University's Farmers Market not only promotes healthier eating by serving fresh produce, it fosters a sense of community," Secretary Thompson said. "Consumers can meet their friends at the market, and get to know people who grow their food."

"The Duke Farmers Market provides healthy food options that are conveniently available to Duke employees,'' said Julie Joyner, Manager of the Duke Farmers Market/Live for Life Program. "Beyond simply providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables, the program also encourages commitment to health objectives through unique contests, incentive programs, cooking demonstrations and fresh produce spotlights."
