HR Enhances Support for Hearing Impaired
Duke HR recently enhanced access to its information and resources for the speech and hearing impaired through collaboration with the North Carolina Telecommunications Relay Service.
Relay North Carolina is a service that relays a conversation between a person with a speech or hearing disability using a TDD/TTY (Test Telephone) and a hearing person using a regular telephone. Individuals with hearing or speech disabilities can be connected to Duke HR by calling Relay North Carolina at 1-800-735-2962 and requesting to be connected to Duke HR at 919-684-5600.
The Duke HR web site also now features an icon at the bottom left corner of the page that represents the international symbol for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The icon serves as a link to instructions for accessing TDD/TTY service.
HR staff can use Relay North Carolina if it is necessary to call to a deaf or hard of hearing customer. Relay North Carolina asks hearing callers to dial 711 to access Relay North Carolina. The caller then requests that the operator connect them with the customer's number. The Relay operator will serve as the TDD/TTY translator during the telephone call.
This service, which is confidential and free of charge, is one of the ways Duke helps support its diverse workforce.
