Quality Temps Finding Their Place at Duke
In 1985, Janet Isackson began working at Duke as a temporary employee through Duke Temporary Service (DTS). Eighteen years later, she is still here - as a regular staff member in the Duke Publications Group.
Isackson's story is a familiar one at Duke. She is one of many DTS employees who have distinguished themselves while working in temporary positions and eventually transitioned to regular positions at Duke.
"When I began working here, I had no idea how big Duke was or the variety of job opportunities that were available," says Isackson. "My experience with DTS really opened doors for me and through my work as a temporary employee, I was able to meet people who showed an interest in my career and who were able to help me find a full-time position at Duke."
As a human resources manager for the Department of Medicine, Florence Brinkhous has helped transfer outstanding temporary employees into regular positions.
"Three employees currently working with me were all placed by DTS as temporary employees in our department before we hired them full-time, and they are the best group any supervisor could hope to have," says Brinkhous. "Duke managers and departments are the beneficiaries of the excellent work conducted by Duke Temporary Service. DTS does an exceptional job of finding the right people for our department and making sure all of our temporary staffing needs are met."
In September 2002, Duke Temporary Service was enhanced to support the broad and diverse temporary staffing needs across Duke University and Health System. The enhanced DTS, supported by Kelly Services, Inc., a global leader in professional staffing, and a select group of secondary suppliers, provides high quality and seamless service, improved support, more extensive resources and better rates.
Kaye Gardner, a DTS customer for many years, was initially concerned about the changes being made to the temporary staffing program but her experience with the new program has proved to be a positive one.
"Through my years of working with DTS, they have continuously upheld the highest standards for customer service and provided dedicated temporary employees, many with years of experience working throughout Duke," says Gardner, a human resources manager for the Center for Living. "When I heard about the transition to a new temporary staffing program, I was hesitant to believe that it could maintain and improve upon the service I was already receiving. However, with the new program, I receive the same level of hard work and diligence that I always have, and the transition has been seamless to me."
Duke Temporary Service provides fully - screened and qualified temporary staff in clerical, service, technical, professional, accounting, research, clinical research, and administrative roles. DTS maintains a pool of more than 350 temporaries, having more than 1,300 DTS temporaries transferring to regular employment at Duke since 1996. When DTS receives a request for temporary staffing, they conduct an efficient hiring process including personal interviews, pre-employment background checks, orientation, parking permits, staff IDs, and health/drugs screens (when required).
