New Temporary Service Program Announced
August 21, 2002
Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, Department Heads
We wish to announce a change within Duke Temporary Service to improve temporary staffing services at Duke University and Duke University Health System. During the last few months, University and Health System staff have been working to identify one primary vendor capable of meeting all temporary staffing needs across Duke. Consolidating our temporary staffing contracts with one vendor will enable us to leverage our purchasing for significantly better rates. We expect to reduce department costs for temporary staffing by more than $2M annually.
We have selected Kelly Services, Inc., an experienced leader in professional staffing, as our primary temporary staffing vendor. Kelly Services was chosen from a strong contingent of temporary service industry leaders based on its outstanding reputation for cost effective service delivery, its competitive pricing structure, and its firm commitment to diversity. A group of secondary agencies will support areas of special need, and consultants and independent contractors now under Procurement Services and clinical nursing contracts will continue to be managed under other contractual arrangements.
We will launch this new temporary staffing program on September 3, 2002, beginning with clerical, light industrial, accounting and professional positions. The second phase of the program will begin later this fall and will include positions in information technology, research and non-nursing clinical areas. You will soon receive a manager's guide outlining the services to be offered by Duke Temporary Service. Hiring managers currently using temporary employees will receive a transition guide along with an invitation to upcoming staff information sessions.
Please share this information with those in your departments who have responsibility for hiring temporary staff. Should you have questions about the new program, please contact Duke Temporary Service at 681-3132. If you have questions about any existing vendor relationships, please contact Jane Pleasants at 668-2565.
