Employee Fitness Club Expands to Include Duke Health & Fitness Center
The Duke Fitness Club has expanded to include the Duke Health & Fitness Center to provide Duke employees and their family members another opportunity for discounted rates on fitness memberships. Located on the Center for Living campus on Erwin Road, the Duke Health & Fitness Center offers a spacious facility with up-to-date equipment and classes. Members will find a caring staff with advanced degrees and certifications - each one committed to helping you make the changes you need in your life.
The Duke Fitness Club, coordinated through LIVE FOR LIFE, includes a network of full-service fitness facilities in locations throughout the Triangle that offer Duke University and Health System faculty, staff, retirees and their families discounted membership rates. With the addition of the Duke Health & Fitness Center, employees can now choose from more than seven health clubs in 15 locations, providing them with a broad range of fitness options close to where they work and live.
Marc Greenway, manager of Duke Computer Repair and a Duke Fitness Club member, says that he and his family have greatly benefited from the discounts and broad range of services offered through the Duke Fitness Club. After what Greenway describes as a ‘life-changing' knee injury, which led to physical therapy and rehabilitation, he began to exercise on a regular basis.
Most mornings Greenway can be found exercising on the elliptical machine and lifting weights at Wilson Recreation Center. Although he says that he is still working at achieving his health goals, Greenway has lost 50 pounds and lowered his cholesterol by 75 points. In addition, he has lowered his blood pressure and body fat percentage.
Inspired by the success of his exercise routine, Greenway's wife joined the Duke Health & Fitness Center to set out and achieve health goals of her own. Her weight loss of 30 pounds along with Greenway's health improvements inspired both their son and daughter to also consider making healthy changes in their lives.
For the Greenway family, healthy eating and exercise have now become a way of life. "It's become a part of our lifestyle so much so that even when we get away for the weekend, our habits don't go on a vacation," says Greenway.
Retired from the navy after more than 17 years as a helicopter pilot, Greenway is certainly accustomed to "ups and downs" but in the health arena, he is happy to report that he is "safe on deck " and making steady progress.
Enrollment in the Duke Fitness Club is coordinated through LIVE FOR LIFE, and membership rates are paid through payroll deduction. To learn more about the Duke Fitness Club or to become a member of one of the facilities, please visit
