Duke Fitness Club Provides Discounted Memberships Throughout Triangle
As part of Duke's commitment to promote and support healthy lifestyles for employees, Duke faculty, staff, and their family members can join local facilities throughout the Triangle at discounted membership rates.
The Duke Fitness Club, coordinated through LIVE FOR LIFE®, includes a network of seven full-service fitness facilities with 12 locations throughout Durham (including 3 on Duke's campus), Raleigh, Cary, RTP, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.
"Regular exercise plays an important role in reducing the risk of serious health problems such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, and depression," said Julie Joyner, manager of LIVE FOR LIFE. "The Duke Fitness Club enables us to help employees in their effort to maximize their health by providing them access to a broader range of fitness options, both where they work and live."
Marc Greenway, manager of Duke Computer Repair and a Duke Fitness Club member, says that he and his family have greatly benefited from the discounts and broad range of services offered through the Duke Fitness Club. After what Greenway describes as a ‘life-changing' knee injury that led to physical therapy and rehabilitation, he began to exercise on a regular basis.
Most mornings Greenway can be found exercising on the elliptical machine and lifting weights at Wilson Recreation Center. Although he is still working at achieving his health goals, Greenway has lost 50 pounds and lowered his cholesterol by 75 points. In addition, he has lowered his blood pressure and body fat percentage.
Duke faculty, staff and their family members can choose to enroll in any of the following facilities included in the Duke Fitness Club:
- Spa Health Club (Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, RTP, Asheville, Wilmington)
- Wilson Recreation Center/Brodie Recreation Center (Duke University, West Campus/East Campus)
- YMCA of Durham (2 Durham locations - Downtown and Lakewood branches)
- Southwind Health and Wellness Center (Durham)
- Chapel Hill/Carrboro YMCA (Chapel Hill)
- Triangle SportsPlex (Hillsborough)
- Duke Health and Fitness Center (Duke University, Center for Living Campus)
When choosing a fitness facility, individuals should consider what is most important to them about a fitness facility and choose a facility that supports those needs, whether it is location, hours of operation, programs offered, membership rates, or equipment that is available.
LIVE FOR LIFE will be hosting open house events at the fitness facilities to answer questions, provide tours of the facility, and arrange memberships (see sidebar for open house information).
Enrollment in the Duke Fitness Club is coordinated through LIVE FOR LIFE, and membership rates are paid through payroll deduction (see sidebar for enrollment information).
