Expanded Duke Fitness Club Provides Discounted Memberships Throughout Triangle
With the introduction of the expanded Duke Fitness Club, faculty, staff, retirees and
family members can now join local fitness facilities throughout the Triangle at discounted
membership rates.
LIVE FOR LIFE®, Duke's employee health promotion program provided by Human Resources, has
developed a network of six fitness facilities with 12 locations in Durham (including two on
the Duke campus), Raleigh, Cary, RTP, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough to offer discounted memberships.
"Duke's employee population has grown and spread out across the Triangle," said Julie Joyner,
manager of LIVE FOR LIFE. "The expanded Duke Fitness Club enables us to better meet the needs of
faculty and staff by providing access to a broader range of fitness options both where they work
and live."
The Duke Fitness Club includes the following facilities:
- Spa Health Club (Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, RTP, Asheville, Wilmington)
- Wilson Recreation Center/Brodie Recreation Center (Duke University, West Campus/East Campus)
- YMCA of Durham (2 Durham locations - Downtown and Lakewood branches)
- Southwind Health and Wellness Center (Durham)
- Chapel Hill/Carrboro YMCA (Chapel Hill)
- Triangle SportsPlex (Hillsborough)
LIVE FOR LIFE will be hosting open house events at the fitness facilities to answer questions
and arrange memberships (see sidebar for open house information).
LIVE FOR LIFE created the network of discounted fitness facilities to respond to Duke's growing
and geographically more diverse employee population.
"The expansion of the Duke Fitness Club is about providing more options for our workforce," said
George Jackson, M.D., director of Employee Occupational Health and Wellness. "The new network of
facilities is part of our commitment to promote health and wellness among all faculty and staff. Regular
exercise plays an important role in reducing the risk of serious health problems, such as hypertension,
diabetes, heart disease, and depression."
When choosing a fitness facility, individuals should consider what is most important to them about
a fitness facility and choose a facility that supports those needs, whether it is location, hours of
operation, programs offered, membership rates, or equipment that is available.
Enrollment in the Duke Fitness Club is coordinated through LIVE FOR LIFE, and membership rates are
paid through payroll deduction (see sidebar for enrollment information).
