Few things generate more pain for a new
mother than dropping her child at a child care facility for the first time and
returning to work from maternity leave. The Duke Child Care Partnership program
helped Tara Mann get through this experience with greater confidence and a lot
less pain. |

Duke Expands Child Care Options through Partnership
August, 29 2005 Parents working at Duke now have even more opportunities for child care with the expansion of the
Duke Child
Care Partnership (DCCP) to include 20 area child care facilities.
The DCCP facilities currently have 19 vacancies for infants, 20 vacancies for 1- and 2-year-olds, and more than
60 vacancies for children up to 4-years-old.
The partnership was created in 2003 as part of a $200,000 grant from Duke to the Child Care Services Association
(CCSA) to improve the quality of child care in the community. In exchange for this financial support, Duke faculty,
staff and students will receive priority for vacant spaces at these facilities when they become available.
When it was created in 2003, DCCP only included 11 facilities. Today, nearly 300 Duke families have taken advantage
of the DCCP to enroll their children in one of the 20 child care facilities.
"Duke made a significant investment to improve the quality of child care facilities in the community and expand the
opportunities for families at Duke," said Mindy Kornberg, assistant vice president for Human Resources. "We want to get
the word out to let others with child care needs know about the opportunities that exist for them through this partnership."
The Duke Child Care Partnership was one of the efforts to enhance support for work-life balance that came out of the
recommendations from the Women's Initiative in 2003.
"Finding convenient and quality child care can be stressful," Kornberg said. "Through the Duke Child Care
Partnership, we've tried to ease this anxiety by improving access to area facilities for parents at Duke and providing
the information and resources to help them take advantage of these opportunities."
