Duke's On-Campus Child Care Center Receives State's Highest Rating
For the second consecutive year, the Duke Children's Campus, the university's on-campus child care center and preschool, was awarded a five star rated license from the North Carolina Division of Child Development. The five star rating, which is awarded to approximately 10 percent of child care centers in North Carolina, is the highest rating allocated to a child care facility by the state.
The star-rated licenses are based on a compilation of scores received in three areas: program standards, staff education levels and compliance history.
"We are honored to receive this recognition for a second consecutive year," said Valerie Person, director of the Duke Children's Campus. "Our faculty at Duke Children's Campus work hard to ensure that we exceed the expectation of parents as well as the standards set by the Division of Child Development to provide a great environment for children to grow and learn."
The number of stars on a license was an important factor to Lynn Perkins and her husband Brian when they were choosing a child care center for their daughter Elizabeth.
"When we were looking for a child care center, the most important aspects for us were proximity to work, how staff interacted with the children, cleanliness and safety of the environment, and quality of the curriculum that was offered," said Perkins, senior analyst programmer with the Duke Clinical Research Institute. "It was important to us that she go to a center that had been highly rated by the state in these areas, and that is why we chose to send her to the Duke Children's Campus."
Duke Children's Campus, located on Alexander Street at Campus Drive, provides child care for faculty, staff and graduate and professional students of Duke University and Health System. The child care center is managed by Bright Horizons Family Solutions, one of the premier managers of child care centers worldwide.
Last year, the Duke Children's Campus expanded its facility to double the center's capacity. The 6,900-square-foot expansion increased the capacity of the center to 153 children, with a majority of the 77 new spaces designated for infants and toddlers. The faculty and staff managing the center have also doubled from 21 to 42.
The expanded facility resulted from the Women's Initiative launched in 2003 to study and respond to issues among women at Duke. The expanded child care center was among the first recommendations from the study to be acted upon.
