Duke University's On-Campus Child Care Center Receives Five Star Rating
Durham, NC, March 24, 2003 - The Duke Children's Campus, Duke University's on-campus child care center and preschool, was awarded a five star rated license from the North Carolina Division of Child Development. The five star rating, which has been awarded to less than 10 percent of child care centers in North Carolina, is the highest rating allocated to a child care facility by the state.
The star-rated licenses are based on a compilation of scores received in three areas: program standards, staff education levels and compliance history. Duke Children's Campus received a perfect score in each area, earning the maximum total points awarded.
"We are honored by this recognition," said Valerie Person, director of the Duke Children's Campus. "Our faculty at Duke Children's Campus work hard to ensure that we exceed the expectation of parents as well as the standards set by the Division of Child Development."
The number of stars on a license was an important factor to Dr. Talitha Washington when she was choosing a child care center for her children.
"When I was looking for a child care center, the ratings and accreditations associated with the facilities signaled to me how much the faculty worked towards excellence and providing high quality care," said Washington, a research associate for Duke's department of mathematics. "Duke Children's Campus is a family-oriented environment where the faculty are friendly and easy to talk with and welcome you and your child every day with open arms. They really strive to make a great environment for the children."
Duke Children's Campus, located on Alexander Street at Campus Drive, provides child care for faculty and staff of Duke University and Health System. The child care center is managed by Bright Horizons Family Solutions, one of the premier managers of child care centers worldwide.
"Child care is part of the broad range of benefits offered at Duke to address the diverse needs of our faculty and staff," said Clint Davidson, vice president for Human Resources at Duke. "The Duke Children's Campus provides convenient on-campus child care to help our employees balance the demands of work and family. The five-star rating offers reassurance to parents that their children receive the best quality care available."
The Duke Children's Campus also recently announced a $1.4 million
expansion project to double the center's capacity and add spaces for children of graduate and professional students. The 6,900-square-foot expansion is slated for completion by the beginning of the 2003-04 academic year.
