Rising gas prices have fueled interest in alternative transportation options

Alternative Transportation Options
Find a carpool partner. Join a vanpool group. Check bus routes. Investigate a flexible work arrangement. Duke
offers several resources to encourage and support members of the Duke community in using environmentally-friendly
transportation.
These resources include carpool and vanpool parking permits as well as guidelines for establishing flexible work
arrangements such as telecommuting or a compressed work-week that can reduce the need for travel. Departments may
also want to consider teleconference in lieu of on-site meetings.
Members of the Duke community can also take advantage of information and resources offered by Triangle Transit
Authority (TTA) to find a carpool or vanpool partner who lives in your neighborhood. See the resources below for more
information:
Parking & Transportation Services
Duke offers alternative transportation permits to encourage the use of environmentally-friendly alternative
transportation. The options include allowing two people who ride together to share the full annual cost of a permit,
allowing three or more people who carpool to receive permit discounts, and enabling employees who use the TTA Vanpool
to allow the van to park for free.
Triangle Transit Authority
TTA is a regional public transportation provider, offering a wide variety of transit services such as busing and
vanpool options to North Carolina's greater Triangle Region and outlying counties.
Triangle Transit Authority - Ride Sharing
The TTA Rideshare Program offers an Online Rideshare Matching Service that allows you to find people in your
neighborhood who want to carpool or vanpool in a matter of seconds.
Teleconferencing
Duke's Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides a variety of teleconferencing services using its internal
teleconferencing bridge. Teleconference service may be requested 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Flexible Work Options
Duke offers guidelines for the use of different flexible work arrangements. Flexible work arrangements offer
alternative approaches to getting work done through non-traditional work hours, locations, and/or job structures.
Using these guidelines, supervisors and staff can often work together to find creative ways of meeting business needs
while providing greater flexibility than traditional work arrangements.
Environmental Sustainability @ Duke
Duke seeks to provide leadership in environmental stewardship and sustainability on its campus, in its medical
institutions, and in the larger community. As part of this effort, Duke is striving to increase the convenience and
economic incentives for commuters to use alternative modes of transportation to preserve green space from being paved
over and prevent roads from becoming overly congested.
