Duke Named Among State's Top Family-Friendly Employers
Carolina Parent magazine has named Duke University and Health System one of the top family-friendly workplaces in North Carolina.
The magazine published its eleventh annual family-friendly list in its September issue, which identifies the top 50 employers in North Carolina that promote work-life balance through various benefits and policies.
"Even during a challenging economic climate, employers continue to provide creative programs and top-dollar benefits to help employees be productive and effective workers while also having flexibility, resources and support to enjoy and make the most of life with their families," wrote the editors of Carolina Parent.
Duke provides many family-friendly options, including child care, time off benefits, elder care, day camps, discount programs and more to assist faculty and staff in balancing the demands of work and family.
Nancy Gump, administrative assistant at the Fuqua School of Business, took advantage of one Duke's unique family-friendly benefits: the Kiel Memorial Vacation/PTO Donation Program. She received donated time from her colleagues to help care for her terminally ill husband.
"In the 40 years that I've been working, I've never had that opportunity with other places where fellow employees could help you by donating their time," Gump said. "They didn't have to do it, but they did, and that says a lot about the people at Duke."
Duke offers many other family-friendly programs, including flexible work arrangements and education assistance, the Duke Farmers Market, and wellness programs that have helped employees like Tiwatha Godley reach their health goals.
"My daughters keep me going," said Godley, a nursing care assistant and health unit coordinator at Duke University Hospital who lost more than 100 lbs. through Duke's health and fitness programs. "I want to be healthy for them, and I want them to be healthy. Before, I couldn't be involved in their activities. I'd get home from work and take a nap. Now they can hardly keep up with me."
Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for Human Resources, said that Carolina Parent is one of the latest in a series of organizations citing Duke as a best place to work.
"The value of working at Duke goes beyond just the paycheck," Cavanaugh said. "People come here and stay here because they have a unique opportunity to make a difference, to improve the community and the world around us through their work. We've tried to create the programs, policies and benefits to support their efforts and enable them to meet their personal and professional goals."
With more than 33,000 faculty and staff, Duke is the largest private employer in the Triangle. For more information about Duke's family-friendly programs, visit the Family-Friendly Benefits web site.
