2008 Diversity Awards
Rebecca W. Johnson, Nurse Clinician in the Duke University Hospital Cardiac Care Unit is being honored this year for her leadership in adapting care practices to meet differing patient needs due to cultural, religious and economic diversity.
She is being acknowledged as an outstanding role model and key resource for others as they provide patient care, interact with and support diverse people under the stress of critical illness. Additionally, her research has defined important differences in perceptions of the end of life process among African Americans and is providing key findings to help other medical practitioners increase effectiveness throughout the United States.
Rebecca also models highly effective work place approaches in collaborating with, teaching and mentoring students, house staff, visiting nurses and others who come to the CCU; a group of people from all over the world, representing diverse countries, languages, values, economic backgrounds, religions, races and cultures. She has gone to great lengths to match people with meaningful experiences to demonstrate how diversity will shape their future medical practices. In doing so, she presents a most positive impression of Duke University and improves the effectiveness of her CCU team.
Rebecca was nominated by numerous colleagues and supervisors who have observed her over thirteen years in her role as a clinician, care coordinator and key liaison among medical staff, patients and families. Her respect for and keen awareness of the special needs of people from different cultural, socioeconomic and educational levels has made her an invaluable resource to colleagues, patients, families and students.
