Cash In When You Refer a Friend
How would you spend $1,000? How about $2,000? You might have the opportunity to answer that question if you refer a
friend who gets hired at DUHS as a certified medical coder II or as a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant
at Duke Health Community Care.
Duke University Health System has introduced two new applicant referral programs to help fill vacancies in critical areas
of need. If a DUHS employee refers someone who is hired for one of these two positions, he or she can earn an incentive bonus
of $2,000 for a certified medical coder II hired by DUHS or $1,000 for a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant
hired by Duke Health Community Care. Referrals will be accepted June 1 - November 30, 2006.
All DUHS and PDC staff are eligible to participate in the program except for administrators, physicians, Human Resources
staff and manager/supervisors who are directly or indirectly responsible for hiring the referral candidate(s).
Staff who know a certified medical coder II, physical therapist, or physical
therapist assistant should complete the referral
form, attach an original copy of the person's resume and submit it to their entity's
Human Resources Department. All qualified candidates will be included in the applicant pool. Since the interviewing process is
confidential, Human Resources will not be able to confirm the status of the position or the bonus until after an offer is accepted.
If the person referred by an eligible employee is hired for a full-time position (60-80 hours per pay period), the referring
employee will receive the incentive bonus in two installments. The first installment will be paid after the staff member completes
his/her 90-day orientation and evaluation period. The second installment will be paid after the staff member has successfully
completed one year of service. All state, federal and FICA taxes will be withheld from these payments and will be reported as
part of the staff member's yearly earned income. Payment of the bonus is dependent on the eligible employee still being on the
payroll at the time of payout.
Even better, there is no limit on the number of cash incentives an eligible staff member may receive. So employees can make
referrals for all the qualified candidates they want.
Program exclusions:
Incentives will not be paid in the following cases:
- If the applicant has held a position in the Duke University Health System, including temporary, contract or consulting within twelve months of the referral date noted on the form.
- If the applicant has previously applied (sent in application or resume) within the last twelve months of the referral date noted on the form.
- If the referral form was received after the applicant has been called, interviewed or filed a resume with Human Resources.
