This March, 15 children of Campus Services employees attended "Spring Fling", a free camp established as a pilot program at Duke. "Spring Fling" was one of many new and enhanced family-friendly programs that led Duke to be named as one of the top family-friendly workplaces in North Carolina by Carolina Parent magazine for the fifth consecutive year.

Duke Named Among Top Family-Friendly Employers

For the fifth consecutive year, Duke University and Health System has been named as one of the top family-friendly workplaces in North Carolina by Carolina Parent magazine.

The magazine published its eighth annual family-friendly list in its September issue.

"Duke University and Health System offers an extensive family-friendly benefits package for its many employees," wrote the editors for Carolina Parent. "And even more diverse options are being added almost all the time."

Among the family-friendly programs Duke enhanced in the last year was the addition of nine new child care centers to the Duke Child Care Partnership, which now provides priority placement at 29 area child care centers for parents at Duke. The partnership was created in 2003 as part of a $200,000 grant from Duke to the Child Care Services Association (CCSA) to improve the quality of child care in the community and improve access to these centers for those at Duke.

Kristin Page, a fellow at the Division of Hematology-Oncology, is among the nearly 370 families at Duke who take advantage of the Duke Child Care Partnership.

"We found several Duke Child Care Partnership centers on the Duke web site that were located near our new home," said Page, who began looking for a child care center for her son shortly after moving to Durham for a new job with Duke. "It was a real comfort knowing that the Duke name was associated with them."

Other family-friendly programs introduced by Duke in the last year include the Hurricane Katrina Vacation/PTO Donation Program. The Hurricane Katrina Vacation/PTO Donation Program allowed employees to donated accrued vacation or paid time off to those employees who volunteered for organized disaster relief efforts or who supported immediate family members affected by the hurricane. Duke also opened its doors to college students of employees who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Another program introduced this year was the Mobile Farmers Market, which provides an opportunity for employees to buy a share of their favorite products from a participating farmer and pick up their weekly share on Duke's campus.

"We are proud to be recognized once again by Carolina Parent as one of North Carolina's top family-friendly companies," said Clint Davidson, vice president of Human Resources. "While we have been named to this prestigious list for five consecutive years, we continue to improve existing programs and introduce new ones to make Duke a more supportive place for faculty and staff who are managing the difficult challenges of work and family life."

With more than 27,000 faculty and staff, Duke is the largest private employer in the Triangle. For more information about Duke's family-friendly programs, visit the Family-Friendly Benefits Web Site.
