Occupational Summary

The Duke University Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. SMDEP is a free, six-week summer residential experience providing intensive and personalized preparation for medical school for rising college sophomores and rising juniors who are underrepresented in medicine and/or disadvantaged. The program provides instruction and experiential opportunities in the premedical sciences and mathematics; medical writing, health career preceptorships; health professions advising; issues in contemporary medicine; clinical exposures; and mentorship.

Work Performed

SMDEP Program Assistants report to the SMDEP Program Administrator.

The Program Assistants carry out the design of the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program by providing intensive instruction in science and math; providing tutorial support and guidance to support classroom instruction; providing observational clinical experiences; providing a safe, structured residential experiences that supports the goals of the program; providing a co-curricular program that supports healthy interaction and a balanced approach to academic achievement; providing academic advisement and counsel; other duties as directed.

SMDEP personnel have the following specific responsibilities:

(a) instruction in the basic sciences, mathematics, and writing; (b) classroom assistance and tutoring; (c) residence hall safety (d) co-curricular activity planning and chaperoning

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

A bachelor?s degree is preferred.

 

Experience:

SMDEP seeks individuals who have experience in intensive learning environments. The candidates should have teaching and tutorial experience and have knowledge of the developmental needs of college age students. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are required.
