maintenance duties in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of grounds equipment. Keeps a record of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, including placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment repairs or service. Serves on advisory committees and make recommendations on the purchases of new equipment and supplies. Coordinates repairs with Grounds Supervisors and other personnel.
Interact with customers and vendors.
Make recommendations for outsourcing repairs of equipment and vehicles.
Provide road service to fleet vehicles and other grounds equipment.
Perform system checks on equipment using proper diagnostic tools.
Use proper procedures for checking and maintaining hydraulic pressures on equipment.
Repair and/or rebuild transmissions and engines as required.
Perform repairs and adjustment of the engines and cutting mechanisms of a wide variety of grounds related equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance of transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, injectors, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, pumps and valves.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, injectors, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, pumps and valves.
Perform the installation and adjustment of brakes, batteries, tires, safety devices, hydraulic hoses and fittings.
Overhaul equipment as required.
Perform inspections of equipment for operating deficiencies and make routine adjustments where necessary.
Secure tools, parts, and equipment as necessary.
Clean work areas after completion of job.
Perform welding repairs. Perform a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment.
Pickup and deliver supplies and materials to various locations as required.
Complete and maintain all necessary documentation, computerized if necessary.
Instruct grounds personnel in proper and safe operation of all equipment.
Follows all proper shop operational procedures and safety guidelines.
Maintain good working relations and interaction with customers and vendors.
Maintain proper inventory of parts and supplies.
Provide technical guidance and direction to lower level employees.
Perform duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
high school education with course work in skilled mechanical craft, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment. Requires a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver?s License.
Possess a valid Duke forklift operator card.
Compliance with Duke University Fleet Safety Policy.
Completed Briggs and Stratton Service School for 2/4 stroke engines.
Completed Stihl Service School for 2/4 stroke engines. Completed John Deere Service School and obtained small engine certification.
Completed Toro Service School and obtained small engine certification. Completed a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of welding training from a certified welder.
