Coordinate activities within the Psychology Department machine shop; perform a variety of duties in the design and fabrication of experimental apparatus and equipment utilized in the Psychology Department research laboratories; perform specialized mechanical duties in the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.
Confer with faculty and students in planning, developing and modifying design of experimental equipment and apparatus; design, construct and install research equipment and apparatus using various machine shop equipment to include lathes, milling machines, drill presses, saws, welding and soldering equipment and woodworking machines. Machine and process routine and precision parts from such materials as wood, metal, plastics and glass according to specifications; work from plans, drawings and specifications of various detail to determine materials, tolerances and stresses. Monitor operation of the machine shop to include ordering necessary supplies, maintaining records for billing purposes, evaluating and purchasing of new instructional equipment, shop equipment and supplies.
Diagnose and correct to include the repair, adjustment or calibration of malfunctioning shop equipment and mechanical laboratory equipment utilizing various hand and power tools.
Purchase, maintain, set up, operate and instruct others in the use of video equipment; make minor repairs as needed.
Maintain inventory of files of laboratory equipment; store and issue departmental laboratory equipment and retain records of maintenance schedules. Coordinate operation of the equipment shop for personal use of students and faculty; instruct students and other employees in the proper use of laboratory equipment and shop equipment; monitor utilization of equipment and facilities. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
