Occupational Summary

Perform varied secretarial duties of a complex and technical nature in support of research and related teaching activities to relieve professional personnel of office and routine research responsibilities and to maintain an efficient and effective operation.

Work Performed

Organize and maintain teaching and research f iles of manuscripts, lecture notes, reports, records and correspondence required for reference, efficient operation of office and verification of bibliographic references.

Type and edit technical or scientific manuscripts, grant applications, lectures, reports and correspondence from rough drafts, corrected copy or voice recordings utilizing knowledge of grammatical form, technical or scientific terminology symbols and format, and established style manual procedures. Arrange and type technical or scient if ic charts and graphs ensuring accurate, aesthetic and organized presentation of data on the printed page.

Operate work processing equipment to record and edit typed materials on electronic media ensuring appropriateness of form and accuracy of content.

Synthesize research information and compose and type routine or general abstracts, research descriptions and/or answers to correspondence of inquiry.

Arrange appointments, organize and schedule meetings and make travel arrangements as required; prepare and organize materials for use at professional meetings, seminars and/or site visits.

Answer telephone, take messages, screen calls and reply to questions in accordance with general and specific instructions.

May advise or direct lower level employees in the office, make work assignments and review work for accuracy and completeness.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of basic grammar, mathematical and clerical principles normally acquired through a high school education.

 

Experience:

Work requires two years of secretarial/cleric4l experience in a technical/scientific setting to become familiar with technical/scientific terminology and procedures as well as accepted office organization, accounting and communications practices.
