Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of clerical duties to assist patients in obtaining clinic and ancillary department services.

Work Performed

Perform a variety of clerical duties involved in greeting and directing patients, making appointments, processing forms and providing information to assist patients in obtaining clinic and ancillary department services.

Assemble and route patient records and specimens to assigned locations; order patient charts as required.

Provide information to patients on such matters as services, charges and routine treatment procedures. Answer telephone, take messages, transfer calls and provide information to other departments upon request.

Make arrangements for the admittance of patients to the hospital; notify patients of schedule admittance date; arrange for the transfer of patients to other clinics or wards as required.

Receive payments on patient accounts; compare cash receipts and payments in balancing daily work; make refunds as required. Assist in the compilation of data for regular and special reports.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of basic clerical and communication principles generally acquired through a high school education.

 

Experience:

Work requires six months of experience in a related position to become familiar with the accepted clerical practices involved in greeting and providing assistance to patients and visitors seeking health care services at Duke University Medical Center clinics.
