Occupational Summary
Manage the administration of the charitable remainder trust accounts at Duke University in accordance with terms of nominating instrument and in a manner consistent with the needs of principals, beneficiaries and remainder men. Supervise one or more trust officers and/or staff. Advise other staff members regarding Trust Administration. Position reports to the head of Planned Giving.
Work Performed
Administer charitable remainder trust accounts and provide related information support to the Development Office; arrange for the assembly, appraisal, evaluation, transfer and protection of assets or business interests; establish documentation of new accounts; approve frequency and amounts of payments; coordinate with administering bank for accounting, distribution and tax return preparation; coordinate administrative functions with other offices and departments as required, including, but not limited to, administering bank, development officers, attorneys, co-fiduciaries, and Endowment Investment Accounting Office; recommend to investment manager investment allocation needs as appropriate. Supervise work of other trust officers and/or staff. Maintain liaison with various individuals, agencies and organizations related to charitable remainder trust accounts; resolve problems brought by donors, beneficiaries or others; represent charitable remainder trusts at meetings of groups related to charitable giving for which the trust administrator provides a service. Serve as resource to the other Development Office staff members by providing information that enhances solicitation efforts on such topics as acceptable trust and annuity payouts, trust account investment positions, and proper use of income or principal for accounts being managed. Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training: |
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelors degree program. Prefer JD, Certified Financial Planner, CPA or advanced degree in business, finance, or related field. |

Experience: |
Work requires a broad knowledge of and familiarity with investments, law, charitable planned giving, and related accounting functions acquired through a minimum of seven years related experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE |

Skills: |
Knowledge of all aspects related to the establishment of various trust agreements. Knowledge of tax laws and regulations and how this relates to trusts and other legal documents. Excellent customer service skills to be able to explain all of this to donors and/or prospects who have a variety of knowledge and experience with these agreements, terms, etc. |
