The Duke Farmers Market is one of the many programs that supports Duke's sustainability efforts.
Fast Fact
Fast Fact: "Locavore" was chosen as the "word of the year" in 2007 by the Oxford American Dictionary.
The theme for the market this year is to "Be a Locavore!" Locavores are people who try to eat local food whenever possible. At the Duke Farmers Market, you
can shake hands with the farmer, ask questions about how your food is grown, taste something new and get recipe ideas. Last year's market was so popular that
several other farms will be added this year.
Locavores eat local food whenever possible. When you eat locally, you enjoy fresher, more nutritious, tastier foods-often at prices lower than those in grocery stores.
Buying local foods reduces energy consumption and does not require as much transportation or storage. Transporting and storing foods are energy intensive, pollute our air
and water, and contribute to global warming.
Buying locally grown foods helps keep all sectors of the local economy healthy. Communities that produce their own food do
not rely as much on far-away food producers. Buying local helps preserve biodiversity and long-term stability of our food supply. Farmers selling locally often raise wonderful
heirloom varieties that are hard to find in supermarkets.
