SARS
Guidelines
Below is the current guidance developed by Duke University Employee Occupational Health and Wellness and Student Health Center in collaboration with Duke University infectious disease faculty.
- If you need additional information or need to discuss special circumstances, contact Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW) at 684-3136 during the work day or 684-8115 after hours; e-mail
jacks004@mc.duke.edu; contact the Student Health Center (SHC) at
681-9355; email shc_sars@mc.duke.edu.
- Faculty, staff or students who have been in one of the known transmission areas or exposed to individuals who have recently traveled in
high-risk SARS areas within the past 14 days should be vigilant for fever, cough and/ or difficulty breathing. Faculty or staff members, if asymptomatic, do
not need to be restricted from work. Students, if asymptomatic, do not need to be restricted from class. Faculty, staff and students do
not need to wear a mask if they are asymptomatic. Faculty and staff are encouraged to advise their department head/manager of their travel history. Students should notify their advisory dean of their travel history. Graduate and professional students should notify their respective office of student affairs.
- If faculty, staff or students with this exposure (travel) history become ill with fever, cough and/or difficulty breathing at work or in class, they should
put on a mask.* Faculty and staff should call EOHW, explain their travel history and follow the instructions of the healthcare provider. Students should call SHC, explain their travel history and follow the instructions of the student health nurse.
- If faculty or staff members become ill at home, they should contact their personal physician, explain their travel history and report to the physician
with a mask on.* The faculty or staff member must contact EOHW before reporting back to work.
- If students become ill in their local home, they should contact SHC, explain their travel history,
put on a mask* and follow the instructions of the student health nurse.
- Faculty, staff or students who are exposed to a close contact at home (spouse, child, parent, classmate) who has traveled to a high-risk area should be vigilant for the development of illness in the close contact. If illness should develop in the close contact, the faculty or staff member must call EOHW for guidance regarding work; the student must call SHC for guidance.
*A mask in this context may be a dust mask available at hardware stores, a
surgical mask or simply a folded cloth held over the nose and mouth to contain
droplets generated by coughing. A mask of this nature is not protective against
infection but can significantly reduce the risk of transmission of infection
from a sick person.
