Week 6 Update

February 24, 2009

I guess Mary Ann, my trainer, must have really taken my last blog post to heart when I said I enjoyed the challenging parts of my workout routine! This week she completely changed my workout and it was a lot harder. I might add that she seemed a little gleeful about the changes she was making... However, just as I had said last week, I really enjoyed the challenge. I actually went back to the gym twice during the week to do the new workout. I was really sore and tired after the first couple of times, but by the third session, I could feel the difference. I was even able to go up on the weight on some of the exercises. Having a more challenging workout gave me an even greater sense of accomplishment when I was done at the gym. I learned that I enjoy feeling like I've worked hard.

One of the most memorable parts of this week came during my workout with Mary Ann. I guess I've always thought of myself as a wimp, or at least not athletic. Back in my original essay for the contest, I promised I would work hard, but I had been feeling like I was barely keeping up my end of the bargain when it came to exercise. Well, during my session with Mary Ann on Tuesday, she said I was tough. To some people, that might seem like no big deal, but to me, it meant a lot. I can be proud of the work I've put in during this program, and I guess I can stop thinking of myself as weak or lazy or whatever else I use as an excuse to slack off in the exercise department. That one adjective really made me stop and think about what I am capable of doing, and it changed how I think of myself. My first reaction was to laugh about being called tough because I thought Mary Ann was just being funny, but I think it's a really useful observation for me. It's both a compliment about the work I've been doing, and a challenge to motivate me to keep it up for the long haul.
