Week 1 Update
January 21, 2009
When I first learned I had been chosen for the Eat Wise and Exercise program, I was really excited, but also humbled. I don't know how many other people wrote essays, but I could hardly believe that mine had won. There's a lot of responsibility with winning a contest like this because everyone wants you to succeed. I know I can work hard and do what my fitness and nutrition coaches ask of me, but it seems daunting as I begin this program.
This week was a real challenge for me because I had a conference out of town for the entire week. Here I am, trying to take control of my eating habits and improve my fitness, and I am out of town, in a hotel, trying to do the best I can with the tools available to me. I was able to make the healthiest choices available to me, and I put in a lot of extra walking miles during my trip. I also followed my nutritionist's advice to try eating a larger breakfast than I normally would — a breakfast that includes some carbohydrates, some fat, and some protein to help me get going and stay energized through the morning. I haven't gotten the exact formula right yet, but I'm working on it. I also had hoped to hit the gym while I was on my trip, but unexpected commitments at the conference kept me from that. However, I did a lot more walking than I had expected I would be doing, so hopefully it balanced out.
The coming week offers some new challenges for me as I try to settle into a
healthier routine at home. I have more control over my food and exercise
choices, but I also am more likely to fall back into old habits since I'm
in familiar surroundings. I will have my first fitness coaching session on
Tuesday, and expect to learn a lot. I'll keep you posted on how this week
progresses.
