2009 Winners

In late 2008, LIVE FOR LIFE received many contest entries for the individual and group makeover. We received such heartfelt essays that it was very difficult to choose the winners.

Listed below are the winners of the lifestyle makeover essay contest, including their submitted essays.

Individual Winner #1

I come from a family where healthy eating habits were not emphasized. My parents are not obese, but are certainly overweight or struggling with weight. I was always a chubby kid, and worked hard in college to lose weight and get to a healthy weight for the first time in my life. I succeeded, but shortly after reaching my goal weight, my doctor put me on medications that caused me to gain weight. Read the complete essay...

When we are children and even as adolescents and, for some, into our twenties and thirties, we often times feel invincible. We feel as though life goes on forever and we will somehow buck the trend and live forever. As we get older we realize that this is far from the truth. The one thing we have in common, other than our passion for working with Duke students, is our love of food. Our staff meetings are generally centered around food — maybe that's why they are so well-attended and productive.
