Duke Named Among Top Family-Friendly Employers
For the sixth consecutive year, Duke University and Health System has been named as one of the top family-friendly workplaces in North Carolina by
Carolina Parent magazine.
The magazine published its ninth annual family-friendly list in its September issue.
Among the family-friendly programs Duke enhanced in the last year was the Duke Child Care Partnership, which now provides priority placement at 30 area child care centers for parents at Duke. The partnership was created in 2003 as part of a $200,000 grant from Duke to the Child Care Services Association to improve the quality of child care in the community and improve access to these centers for those at Duke.
LaKiesha McCray, a registered nurse at Duke Hospital, is among the more than 300 families at Duke who take advantage of the Duke Child Care Partnership.
"I've worked at other university hospitals across the country, from Baltimore to Los Angeles, as a traveling nurse, and there aren't many places that provide anything like this," said McCray. "We moved here recently from Los Angeles and I was so happy to hear Duke had a program like this."
Duke offers many other family-friendly programs, including the flexible work arrangements and education assistance and the Mobile Farmers Market, which provides an opportunity for employees to buy a share of their favorite products from a participating farmer and pick up their weekly share on Duke's campus.

"While we have been named to this prestigious list for six consecutive years, we continue to improve existing programs and introduce new ones to make Duke a more supportive place for faculty and staff who are managing the difficult challenges of work and family life."
