Traditional Benefits
Duke offers employees an array of convenient and affordable benefits to meet the needs of them and their family members, including high-quality health and dental care plans, vacation/paid time off, retirement plans, life insurance and disability insurance.
Each employee's needs are different -- that's why Duke offers different health care plans to meet the needs of Duke faculty, staff and their family members. Each health care plan covers pharmacy and mental health benefits.
Duke offers employees a choice of dental care plans, depending on the level of coverage faculty, staff and their family members may need. Both plans cover preventive, basic, and major services, but they differ in how they pay for covered services. Under each plan, participants can visit any licensed dentist.
While Duke's health plan provides coverage for annual eye exams, Duke is pleased to offer a nationwide vision care plan to manage that cost of eyeglasses and contact lenses, as well as eye examinations.
Duke offers two different types of retirement plans. Biweekly paid employees are eligible for two Duke retirement plans - the Employees' Retirement Plan and the Duke Savings for Retirement Plan. The Employees' Retirement Plan is a pension plan paid for entirely by Duke. The Duke Savings for Retirement Plan is a 403(b) plan, funded by an employee's voluntary pre-tax deductions. Faculty and monthly paid staff are eligible for the Duke Faculty and Staff Retirement Plan. This program is funded both by employee and Duke's contributions for monthly paid staff.
Vacation/Paid Time Off
- Vacation, Sick Time, and Holidays - (Campus and Medical Center employees only) Duke staff members accrue benefit time using a traditional vacation, holiday, and sick time model.
- Paid Time Off (PTO) - (Health System employees only) Duke University Health System provides paid time off for eligible employees for the purpose of rest, relaxation, illness, holidays, personal, and family needs. The PTO program puts vacation, sick leave, holiday, and funeral leave into one program. This gives employees more flexibility in scheduling time off to balance work and family life.
Duke offers two reimbursement accounts: a Health Care Reimbursement Account (for health care expenses not covered by insurance) and a Dependent Care Reimbursement Account. Reimbursement accounts help faculty and staff take advantage of tax savings on eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Duke offers a comprehensive life insurance program, including both employer paid plans and employee paid programs from which faculty and staff can choose to participate to supplement their insurance needs.
Duke offers comprehensive disability insurance programs, including both an employer paid plan and voluntary employee paid programs. After three years of service of full time service, Duke provides disability coverage to replace 60% of base salary (up to $25,000 per month). The three-year service requirement is waived if an employee had an employer-sponsored long term disability plan within 90 days of their full-time employment at Duke.
