Employees have 30 days from the registration of
their same-sex spousal relationship or other qualifying life events to
enroll or
make changes to their health, dental, vision, and reimbursement accounts.
Otherwise, changes to your coverage may only be made during the annual Open
Enrollment period in the fall.
Health Insurance
Health insurance is available to Duke employees who work at least 20 hours
per week. You may select from among four health insurance options. Duke
contributes to the
cost of health insurance if you are an employee working 30 or more hours per week or full-time
faculty.
In order to enroll any dependent children of a same-sex partner in the health
plan, the partner must also be enrolled in the same plan. The partner
is not required to enroll in the plan if the partner's children are legally
adopted by the employee. Duke provides the same rate of contribution towards the
cost of the insurance as it would for an opposite sex spouse, however, the
Internal Revenue Code (IRC) does not yet allow a partner's premium to be a
pretax deduction, and the employer's contribution to your partner's premium is
considered income to you.
Dental Insurance
Dental Insurance covers preventive, basic, and major dental expenses
for you and your family. Two plans are available: Plan A pays a percentage of
usual and customary charges; Plan B pays a lower in-network scheduled
amount with a copayment. The amount paid for various procedures varies according
to the procedure and the length of coverage; deductibles and co-payments may
apply.

Vision Insurance
Vision Insurance is offered to help you and your family manage the cost of eyeglasses and contact lenses, as
well as eye examinations. In order to enroll any dependent children of a same-sex partner in the vision plan,
the partner must also be enrolled in the same plan. The partner is not required to enroll in the plan if the
partner's children are legally adopted by the employee. There is no Duke contribution for this benefit. The
