Basic Investment Principles

Contributions to your 403(b) retirement plan are invested with independent vendors into investment funds.  Duke offers five vendors and more than 300 funds in which you may invest.  However, before you begin to make decisions regarding specific vendors and funds, there are several basic investment principles to consider.  Careful study of these principles should help you to better plan your investments and feel more comfortable with your choices.

The material presented in this section is not intended to address all of the many facets of investing.  However, it is a beginning step to learning some basic investment concepts.  All of Duke's retirement vendors offer educational materials on the web to help you further expand your knowledge.  For links to vendor web sites, please visit our Investment Carriers web page.
