Two employees at Duke University react to the current financial crisis and share their thoughts on what they'll do during tough financial times.

A representative from TIAA-CREF visited with Duke employees on Oct. 28, 2008 to talk about what the financial crisis means for their retirement accounts. Afterward, he answered questions about what can be done in tough financial times.

Duke Hosts Retirement Plan Forums for Employees

As the global financial crisis continues to raise concerns among employees about their retirement savings, Duke has scheduled several information sessions with retirement vendors for faculty and staff.

Forums with AIG VALIC, Fidelity, TIAA-CREF, DWS Investments (formally DWS Scudder) and Vanguard are meant to help answer employee questions.

Sylvester Hackney, Duke's associate director of benefits administration, said the sessions are important to employees because "in times of turmoil and turbulence, information is our best ally." Read more...


Retirement Forums Offer Advice, Reassurance for Staff, Faculty

Before the global financial crisis erupted, Duke researcher Blythe Devlin was debating the best time to retire.

The stock market turmoil in recent weeks made her decision more difficult, so she decided to attend a retirement forum on Tuesday with representatives from TIAA-CREF, one of Duke's retirement plan carriers. The session is one of several forums being organized by Duke Human Resources to address questions and concerns among faculty and staff about their retirement investments. Read more...
